Road Works affecting Bridgwater and Surrounding Areas

In the last few years the roads around Bridgwater have become congested to the point of bringing the whole town to a standstill. The cause is the increase in homes and businesses and the massive injection of traffic associated with the construction of Hinkley Point C nuclear power station. However the authorities have failed to build a ring road or bypass meaning the A38 is often impassable. If that wasn’t bad enough there are now major roadworks under way in the town.

Somerset Live reported that: “Major road works to improve a key Bridgwater route are set to cause nearly eight months of slow traffic for motorists. Starting on January 15, 2018, the road works will see a new highway built with two metre cycleway and footways between The Leggar and Quantock terrace. A mini-roundabout will be built on The Leggar with a new priority T-junction on the same road. The maintenance is scheduled to end on August 31, 2018. The aim is to improve transport links between The Clink and The Drove in Bridgwater.”

Roads

The roads affected include The Clink and The Drove, two of the arteries taking traffic from the A38 into northern Bridgwater and on to the main road to Hinkley. The work is supported by Sedgemoor District Council and Somerset County Council and appears in the Local Transport Plan as the authorities grapple with the congestion issues in the town. Traffic is often held up for up to an hour both ways as queues develop leading to massive frustration and lost business.

Many firms are looking to move out of the immediate town area in a bid to beat the traffic with one option the business park at the Stables near Brent Knoll.
